ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN SPORTS MEDIA (AWSM) INTERNSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN SPORTS MEDIA (AWSM) INTERNSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – Since 1990, AWSM has placed about 100 female college students interested in sports media careers in paid internships with employers such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN, USA Track & Field and some of the country’s most respected daily newspapers. All interns receive a $1,000 scholarship from AWSM in addition to whatever pay the internship provides. Copy editing interns receive an additional $1,000 scholarship from the Associated Press Sports Editors. All interns also receive $300 toward travel expenses to the annual AWSM convention, waived convention registration fees and free lodging at the host hotel. Former AWSM interns now work at top media organizations such as The Associated Press, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, The Washington Post and ESPN. Here is the information that you will need to apply: 1. An essay of 750 words or less describing your most memorable experience in sports or sports media that can be typed or copy-and-pasted into the online application form. 2. A pdf of a one-page résumé highlighting your journalism experience. 3. Three references with contact information. 4. A pdf of one letter of recommendation from a professor, advisor, editor, producer or other supervisor who is familiar with your work. 5. A maximum of five samples of your work: clips, editing examples, headlines, layout, press releases, video or audio tapes. Limit recordings to 10 minutes or less. The Sallie Mae Fund sponsors several scholarship programs and supports hundreds of college scholarships. LULAC Scholarship

LULAC National Scholarship Fund

A scholarship program cosponsored by some 70 LULAC Councils who raise scholarship funds at the grass roots level which are matched nationally by sponsoring corporations. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), has considered education its number one priority since it was established in 1929. As part of LULAC’s education efforts, the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) was established in 1975 to provide scholarships to Hispanic students attending colleges and universities. Under the LNSF program, local LULAC Councils, in partnership with local and national businesses, award scholarships to students in their communities. LNSF is administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc., a non-profit educational organization established by LULAC to provide educational programs for Hispanics and other youth.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

* Must apply for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) offers several scholarships through our Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund program. These scholarships are designed to encourage and assist Latino students pursue careers in journalism. Hispanics remain woefully underrepresented in mainstream U.S. newsrooms. NAHJ offers scholarships to college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers as print, photo, broadcast or online journalism. You must plan to attend a college or a university as a full-time student for the entire academic year in order to be eligible for an NAHJ scholarship.

Chronicle of Higher Education Internships Spring/Summer/Fall

The paper is currently seeking interns for the winter/spring 2010 session, which will begin in January. The internships are full-time in our Washington, D.C., office and will last till late May. In addition to a $500 weekly stipend, academic credit can often be arranged.

Three interns will be hired; we are looking for both undergraduates and recent graduates.

All of the interns will have the same primary responsibilities: reporting and writing daily news articles for The Chronicle's Web site (which usually appear subsequently in print), contributing brief features to the "Short Subjects" section, writing news articles for other sections of the newspaper, and doing research for special projects. There is very little grunt work. Interns who prove themselves as reporters and writers are often asked to write full-length features.

Requirements: Experience writing for publication, either at a student newspaper or a professional publication, is required. Candidates with previous internships and deadline-reporting experience are preferred. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2009. Applications that are late, e-mailed, or faxed will not be considered.

Scripps Howard Internship

Duties:
Assignments vary day-to-day. Interns can expect to log tapes, coordinate script, research stories, conduct preliminary interviews, assist during shoots, select footage, perform light clerical duties and assist staff members.

Requirements:
Students who are currently attending an accredited college and have achieved junior or senior status are eligible. Students majoring in journalism, broadcasting or communications are preferred; other majors will be considered. Participants must have good computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities and knowledge of current events. A 3.0 GPA or above is recommended. Students must be able to meet the minimum time commitment.

Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship. Students are required to provide official documentation on school letterhead confirming that they will receive credit for the internship. This documentation must be on file prior to start date.

Deadlines:
Fall and spring applicants are accepted on a rolling basis. The summer program selects and assigns students on a first-come, first-served basis; summer applications will not be accepted after February 28 of each year.
